Hilcott Village Hall
March / April 2024
We are hoping for some better Spring weather so that work can restart on cutting grass and moving rubbish and effluvia at Barnard Meadow. We are relaunching our fundraising online appeal.... Easy Fundraising for online shopping (easyfundraising.org.uk) and Give as you Live for donations (giveasyoulive.com).

We intend to have a Cheese and Wine evening in May/June (date and venue to be confirmed) inviting all our supporters and volunteers and of course other parishioners and friends of the Hall, to share our plans for Barnard Meadow, so watch this space!

FEBRUARY 2024
The Trustees and Management Committee were really pleased with the response to the community wide survey undertaken towards the end of 2023, relating to Barnard Meadow, The results of the survey in pictorial form can be found under the News tab at the top of this page.
We will now undertake a plan to implement the most popular usages of the Meadow.
The standout result of the survey was that many residents were willing to help the project in some shape or form and will be contacted shortly. All contributions to this community space, be it large or small, will help drive this project forward.

January 2024
A draw for a Christmas Hamper took place on Saturday 18 November at our AGM which was held at The Seven Stars Bottlesford at 11 am - 12 noon. Coffee and biscuits were provided. All invited to attend from the parish and beyond.
A survey has been completed on the future use of Barnard Meadow which was sent to all residents of North Newnton Parish. Results will be published.
The fencing has now been erected at Barnard Meadow which delineates our boundary, and we are now in the process of applying for planning permission for a small car park and community space/garden,

September 2023
We intend to publish latest news on a regular basis on the home page of our website hilcottvillagehall.uk which has been refreshed and updated by friends of the hall while our website editor Amy has taken a well deserved family break. There is also a fundraising page for donations (giveasyoulive.com) and online shopping (easyfundraising.org.uk) as we have a challenge with raising funds through grants and donations for the proposed car park and community space (subject to planning permission) at Barnard Meadow and would appreciate any help the community can give.
We had the sad news that our very generous benefactor Andrew Barnard passed away in June and we have posted a tribute on the website.
Now that the nesting season is over, work has started on cutting and strimming at the meadow. Thanks to Tim Gent and his friend Malcolm for their great day’s work. Next will be the erection of fencing to the north and west boundaries by our local contractor with the matched funding money from the Pewsey Area Board grant.
The Environmental Assessment report did not throw up any major issues and we shall be using salient points from the report to inform our application for planning permission.

Feb 2022
As you may have heard, the Trustees have acquired the land to the west of Cassocks, Hilcott, as a gift from a very generous benefactor. We have named this piece of land Barnard Meadow, and our intention is to have a car park and small garden to serve the hall as a community area. (The gifted land can only be used for car park and community garden space as stated in the trust deed.) This is of course a long term project and will require support from the parish, Wiltshire Council and beyond. Initially, we have to clear the ground which is very overgrown after nearly forty years as a derelict field.
We have planning permission to fell the large conifer tree, and now have to remove a sizeable amount of scrub and bushes from the site. A working party is being set up with friends of the hall and others. Any offers of voluntary help from parishioners would be most welcome. Contact is Malcolm Baker at Ivy Cottage, Yards Lane, Tel:01672 851393 and bakerhousehold2@btinternet.com.
The images above are drone footage of the meadow before we started work on the area. The tree has been felled and you can see the difference! As more work is done this page will be updated with photos and descriptions. Please do get in touch if you want to get involved.
March 2022
Our valiant team uncovered the padlock on top of the shelter which has been lying under earth and trees for some years. More digging and scraping and axing is now being carried on, a long job to uncover the rest of the 20 foot long shelter.
April and May 2022
A band of amazing volunteers have been helping Malcolm and Mac to clear the ground on the field and although more to do have made great progress on land which was heavily overgrown, in addition to rubbish from three old sheds.
The most exciting find was the old bunker/shelter dating from 1980.
June 2022
Exciting news - on 9 June there was a gathering of friends and volunteers at Barnard Meadow for the unlocking of the bunker/shelter on the land after 20 years. Unfortunately our generous benefactor Mr Andrew Barnard was unable to be with us due to ill health, but he was insistent that we carry on without him.
The hatch was lifted and a metre of water at the foot of the shaft was apparent. This will now be pumped out so that we can see what else is down there!
A brass plaque was temporarily erected for the day and Paul Oatway, our Wiltshire Councillor, unveiled it and said a few words of encouragement for the ongoing project for a small car park and community space.
Thanks to all who came along and also to those who have contributed with deeds and words to our vision for the community of North Newnton Parish and beyond.
See below for photos.
July/August 2022
In early July at Barnard Meadow, M & M were pumping out water from the shelter and discovered more down there than was first thought. So more work to be done after the holidays. They found a box of 1980s candles!
We obtained a grant of £500 in August from Magic Little Grants for the hire of a skip, so lots of clearing up to do from the site. Thanks in advance to our happy band of volunteers, and thanks to Local Giving for facilitating the grant.
September 2022
We have applied for a grant from Pewsey Area Board for fencing around part of the perimeter at Barnard Meadow and await to hear if we are successful on Monday 19 September at the next PAB meeting.

March 2023
Now the weather is kinder we will be starting to clear, tidy and level the ground at Barnard Meadow. A successful site survey has been carried out with an environmental assessment to follow.
We shall use the grant funding we obtained from Local Giving for a skip to move the considerable amount of old rubbish from the land, and the matched funding from Pewsey Area Board for erection of fencing and gates on the site.
We can then move forward with the plan for a car park and community space. We intend in due course to have benches with commemorative plaques for respected and worthy residents of North Newnton parish.

We want to do this village and the history of the hall justice. The building will contribute to and complement the local area. The design plans have ensured the village hall will be future proof and therefore be relevant to the area for many years to come. Take a look at the plans on this page to see our vision of the new Hilcott Village Hall.
You can see from the photos what that hall used to look like in 1910 and 2017. The building was demolished in 2021. We are now fundraising for the new hall structure. Please get in touch for more information or to find out how you can get involved.
June 2022
Our project team have been meeting in the last two months on the technical parts of the plan for the Village Hall to RIBA standards and requirements, work which is of great help for grants/fundraising for the hall.

Our AGM has been postponed to 1st October from 11 am - 12 noon at The Woodbridge Inn. Refreshments from 10.30 am. All parishioners welcome from Hilcott, Bottlesford and North Newnton. Please see below attachment for the Agenda.
